Goal-Setting is PARAMOUNT and here's out its done...
I've heard it said that a goal NOT written down is just a dream. Now there's nothing wrong with dreams, but if you're hoping for that dream to come to fruition, you need to put it down on paper.
So what will this look like? Well, let's just say you want to lose 10 pounds. The WRONG way to write this goal down looks like this...
I want to lose 10 pounds
This is actually pretty pathetic, although it's a start. The best way to write down your goals would be utilizing the S.M.A.R.T. method. You want to write down S.M.A.R.T. goals. Let me break this down for you.
S=Specific-You want to make your goal as specific as you possibly can. If you can break it down into smaller more manageable parts its even better. If you're going to climb 10 flights of stairs, don't focus on all 10 flights. Instead focus on just making the next step. Does that make sense?
M=Measureable-Make your goals measurable. This is helpful because as you make small measurable steps toward your goal you can track progress. As you begin to see small bits of progress, you're more likely to continue progressing towards the goal.
A=Attainable-When setting goals, be sure that they're not out of this world absurd. You're just setting yourself up for disappointment. If you want to lose 20 pounds by the end of the week, you'll be sorely disappointed at the end of the week.
R-Relevant-Be sure that if you're taking the time to set goals they are absolutely relevant to you. Sometimes when we want something or say we'd like to achieve something, it's more of a "that would be cool if..." However, when something you really want to go after holds a lot of importance, chances are you'll see it through to the end.
T-Time-specific-In my opinion this is the most important of all. Setting a deadline for the accomplishment of your goal puts you in the hot seat. Get a calendar and put it where you see it. Mark the date and circle it!
Let's re-visit the above goal of losing 10 pounds, but this time let's do it the S.M.A.R.T. way...
By June 1st I will have lost 10 pounds by exercising 30 minutes each day and maintaining a strict diet, keeping within my daily macronutrient range.
There you have it! Setting goals using the S.M.A.R.T. method will substantially increase your success at achieving those goals you have for yourself. It might sound too easy, but this method has been around since 1981 and is hailed by many top performers and super-achievers as THE way to achieve success.
I challenge you to give this a try. When you hit those goals, don't forget about me! Drop me a Tweet and let me know about it.
