Entrepreneurship is on the rise! Did you know? A recent article I got my hands on showed that approximately 550,000 Americans start new businesses EVERY MONTH. WOW, that's a lot of business!
Nurse entrepreneurship is a growing trend these days. As a nurse you're equipped with tremendous knowledge and experience that you can use to your advantage. Have you ever been working on your unit and thought, "I wish someone would create something that..?" If so, that particular "something" may be an opportunity in disguise to contribute to a healthcare innovation. YOU MAY JUST HAVE A MILLION DOLLAR IDEA!
In 2010 I was introduced to a business idea that would allow me to cut down on overtime and use my skills from nursing to create a sustainable full time income on a part time basis. I was a little skeptical I could be successful because I had never been an entrepreneur nor had I any business training.
However, after some trial and error (a LOT of errors) I did find success and created an asset that continues to pay me today while I attend Nurse Practitioner school and work in the ICU a few nights per month. It's also allowed my wife to stay home full time with our kids, preventing us from having to hire someone else to do it for us.
The freedom that comes along with entrepreneurship certainly has its challenges, but so does working for someone else for the rest of your life.
A very close friend of mine, Vince Baiera, did just that. He's the Creator and Founder of the Step to Rest™, which is currently in the beginning stages of production and manufacturing, but check out the video below.
Being a nurse, Vince had known that adults fall...a lot. He told me that on average 1 out of every 3 senior adults fall each year and many times it's related to getting in and out of the bed. These injuries can cost 10s of thousands of dollars in medical expenses. He decided to do something about it and created an awesome product to prevent many of these falls from happening. Check out his website by clicking on the Step2Rest Icon. (P.S.-if you are someone or know someone that maybe interested in this product, please contact Vince at Vince.Baiera@gmail.com)
Thanks to all the technological advances that have come along over the past few years, literally anyone has access to powerful tools for building and running a successful international business that only large corporations had access to just a few years ago.
Sites like Fiverr and eLance provide inexpensive services by freelance professionals that you can hire CHEAP for services like logo design, app development, video editing, voice-overs, and even testimonials. Apps like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are social networking sites that now allow you to stream live for product demonstrations or mini-commercials for your products or services for FREE. Or you can pay to market on those platforms as well, but it's not necessary.
If you'd like to learn more about HOW to market your product or services there's no shortage of educational videos on the internet. Just check out YouTube or Vimeo. Or you can go to free professional educational websites like EdX, Khan Academy or even iTunesU.
Let me tell you about another close nurse friend of mine turned entrepreneur. Manuel Trevino is a former combat nurse. He decided to go back to school and earn a Bachelor's degree in Health and Wellness (YES! It's a thing! Cool, right?!). He started a Health and Wellness business called the Warrior Wellness Project which focuses on helping military veterans re-gain their health. People from all walks of life seek his help to get them on track, but his passion is helping veterans like himself. His focus is on nutritional counseling, lifestyle modification, disease prevention and even weight loss. Click here to check out his site.
